Summiting Norway’s Highest Peaks: This hiking tour explores the northern part of Jotunheimen National Park, home to Norway’s highest mountains, including Galdhøpiggen.
It is suitable for confident hikers who may not have high-alpine experience but are ready for challenging terrain.
The first day offers a choice between hiking to Kyrkja or exploring the Storbrean glacier.These routes provide an introduction to the park’s dramatic landscapes and rugged beauty.
The journey continues through the scenic Visdalen valley towards Spiterstulen, surrounded by towering peaks.On the final day, hikers reach Juvasshytta, one of Norway’s highest mountain lodges. From here, the trail leads to the summit of Galdhøpiggen, Norway’s highest point.
Daily hikes cover distances of up to 15 km with ascents of nearly 950 metres. Luggage is transported between lodges to keep day hikes comfortable. Cosy mountain accommodations and excellent local cuisine complete the experience.
Difficulty Level: The tour is of medium difficulty, covering up to 15 km per day with ascents of around 1,000 metres. Hikes last approximately 5–7 hours across varied, often rocky and hilly mountain terrain. Participants should be in normal to good physical condition, with some exposed sections that can mostly be avoided.
Galdhøpiggen: The hike to Galdhøpiggen includes a glacier crossing. On this part a guide will help you and you will hike attached to a rope. After crossing the glacier, you are self-guided again to hike to the summit.
Accommodations: At Spiterstulen and Juvasshytta, you will get a private bathroom with toilet and shower. At Leirvassbu DNT-lodge, you will meet a traditional atmosphere where the rooms have bunk beds and sanitary are in the hall. Leirvassbu has some few rooms with private bathroom on request. PRACTICAL INFORMATION
Equipment list: To fully enjoy your hiking adventure in the mountainous areas, it’s important to dress appropriately for the weather conditions and local temperatures. For a comfortable and enjoyable experience, we recommend wearing warm, waterproof clothing, sturdy mountain hiking boots that provide ankle support, and sunscreen and sunglasses. It is not recommended to wear trail runners, everyday shoes, or sneakers. We also recommend bringing hiking poles in this type of terrain.
When you book with us, we’ll provide you with a packing list to ensure you have all the necessary clothing and gear.
Luggage transport: We will send your luggage from lodge to lodge, so you only will hike with a small backpack.
Meals: All restaurants offer food based on local ingredients. For breakfast there will be buffet. Here you also need to make yourself a packed lunch that you bring to lunch for the day. It is possible to fill a thermos, check with the accommodation. Dinner will be served in the afternoon/evening.
Route: Our selected daily hikes are well-marked, and you will meet other hikers. The trails are narrow, often rocky, and sometimes you need to cross rivers and streams. Therefore, we recommend ankle-height mountain boots and hiking poles. You will receive an access to our partner’s app before travelling. Tour Plan
Oslo to Leirvassbu
Take the bus from Oslo in the morning towards the inland of Norway and the mountain range Jotunheimen. Relax and enjoy the travel through beautiful Gudbrandsdalen in comfortable buses.
Arrival in the afternoon in Lom, where you need to change the bus. You have some buffer time at the small village of Lom where we recommend you visiting the “Norwegian Mountain Center” and trying delicious cinnamon buns from the local bakery before taking the bus further to Leirvassbu.

Hike to Storbrean OR Hike Kyrkja
Alternative 1 – Hike to Storbrean Glacier
Time: 4 hours, Distance: 12 km, ↑ 550 meters
Take the bus in the morning to Storbrean (please ask for the departure time at the reception). The bus trip takes 10 minutes, and ticket must be bought on spot. From here, you can follow the signed trail up to the glacier (2,4 km one way) and learn about the glacier’s history. Get inspired from the glacier and turn around on the same trail down to the road. Walk then back on the road to Leirvassbu.
Alternative 2 – Hike Kyrkja
Time: 5-6 hours, Distance: 9 kilometres, ↑ 650 meters
From the lodge, you’ll catch sight of the iconic mountain towering over the lake. To reach its summit, a fearless spirit is required as most of the hike is in rocky terrain and the final meters demand a climb with considerable exposure. Yet, for those bold enough to embrace the challenge, an extraordinary and unforgettable experience awaits. This hike is only recommended with good visibility.

Hike Leirvassbu – Spiterstulen
Time: 5-7 hours, Distance: 16 km, ↑ 400 meters
Explore the stunning landscapes surrounding Leirvatnet on the north side and venture eastward into Kyrkjeglupen, navigating through rugged terrain. This tour promises breathtaking scenery and an unforgettable hiking experience amidst the natural beauty of the area. If you are lucky, you might even meet wild reindeers on the way.

Hike Spiterstulen – Juvasshytta
Time: 4-6 hours, Distance: 14 km, ↑ 950 meters
Today’s adventure begins as you embark on a hike down the gravel road alongside Visdalen, tracing the gentle curves of the Visa river for the first 5 kilometers. Upon reaching the summer farm of Heimresætre, you’ll cross the river via a sturdy bridge and commence a gradual ascent along the Stua river, scaling the valley’s side. The climb is substantial, leading you steadily upward until you reach the expansive plateau of Juvflye, where the historical refuge of Juvasshytta awaits.

Guided hike to Galdhøpiggen
Time: 5-7 hours, Distance: 12 km, ↑ 650 meters
Today you’ll conquer Norway’s highest summit. Your guide provides you with the necessary harness for glacier crossing and gives you some essential details for the hike. The journey commences with a gradual ascent towards the glacier. Once on the glacier, safety is ensured through rope attachment. Following the glacier, the hike’s steepest segment unfolds along a rocky trail leading to the summit.
Group dynamics dictates ample summit time before the return journey. In peak season, the summit cabin at Galdhøpiggen offers provisions, but we recommend you taking your own packed lunch and drinks for the hike.
